Mossio Vineyards

Mossio is a synonym of a hard-working family, which cares for the tradition and protection of the land and the grapes it gives them. Valerio Mossio, a 4th generation wine maker, is running the winery and vineyards with the help of his brothers and sons. Valerio is a great friend that I know since 2016, not so long ago, but it feels like an honest friendship. We met in Munich while I was working there for Eataly and we had one of the most amazing tasting events and also a great dinner after that with my whole team. It was an instant respect, love and friendship in the eyes of all people around the table looking at this great personality, honest and pure with not a hint of a businessman, but a hard working farmer caring for all values left from his family. Today I tell you about one of the many visits I made last years to Piedmont and Valerio, who is one of the reasons this region is so close to my heart and palate.

It will not be a lie if you hear from me or many specialists around the world that his Dolcetto DOC is probably the best in the world. That would be hard to measure, but for sure it is a wine that you have probably never tried at this level and attention to detail. I have just tried his Dolcetto d’Alba DOC Piano Delli Perdoni 2018 (latest vinatge) and it is out of this world, so balanced, well-structured and with a potential to age of up to 10 years. He also produces powerful and fragrant Barbera d’Alba DOC and Barolo style Nebbiolo DOC with latest vintage of 2016 showing amazing potential to age, develop and make you forget that it is not a Barolo from a famous Cru.

With vineyards of up to 80 years old giving less quantity of grapes, but much more quality and potential. Everything is natural, made by hand by Valerio and his family, which just resembles so beatifully, in an artisianal and rustic way, in the bottle every time you pop the cork and pour the first glass. The winery is situated in Rodello, province of Cuneo (Piedmont) away from the Barolo and Barbaresco route, but it is worth exploring and can show you the real Piedmont, wines, food and most of the people just like my great friend Valerio. Thank you Mossio family for welcoming my family and making us feel at home, in the times of Covid we dream of these visits even more and for sure they will resume soon. Until then, we will explore this world with another great glass of your wines.

Salute, Valerio!
